It is (can be) fast, impractical, and a terrible financial decision. All boxes checked for project car excellence.

Although $8500 is a bit steep, especially sans motor and tranny, and right out if it doesn’t have a fuel cell, steering, or brakes. That’s the Jeff Gordon tax, even though this is not a ‘real’ Jeff Gordon car (no documents). Put a Chevy 572 and a Jerico 4-speed in and you have one heck of a track day car, or death machine.

I would also put lights on it an register it as a 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, and put it on my insurance as Chevy Monte Carlo with safety enhancements.

572 would be cool, but heavy. A standard NASCAR V8 can be found for $12-15 thousand. $10,000 more for a trans and maybe a quick change. A couple thousand for a seat and other safety gear. $35,000 for a track toy seems like quite a bit until you remember that this will outrun most street cars on a track, be safer than some street cars turned track cars, be stupid simple to work on, and be a fun challenge to drive.

The problem with the NASCAR V8 (and probably with the 572) is it will need race gas (110 Octane IIRC), it would probably be a bit better with an LS9. It is a bit of a dip in power, but it can run on Premium.

Yeah, my ideal for a street running NASCAR would be an LS swapped into a Petty Ride Along 2 seater wrapped in a Jeff Gordon livery.

It would be nice to not have to pay $5.50 /gallon to fill it up

Documented race cars are very expensive. But stock cars are also easy to wrap. A documented 2012 Jeff Gordon COT sold for about 36k a year ago, but you could end up with the same car if you bought a 15k Tommy Baldwin COT and wrapped it.
